The ‘Low Down: Vintage Shopping in… Glasgow

THE PILLOW team headed up to Glasgow last week to drink too much at the MOBO awards, but in between checking out the fresh urban talent from the UK, we hit up the (frankly amazing) vintage shops that Glasgow has to offer.

Postcard Limited is a super cute second-hand store by day and ultra trendy bar by night. It was masterminded by Jennifer Paley, 25, originally from New Jersey in the US but moved to Glasgow to study at the School Of Art, and her husband Frazer McFadzean, 25. The couple sell pre-loved items alongside new labels such as Motel and Pop Boutique from rails and suitcases. We spotted a beautiful silver goat-hair coat for a stunning £85.

Jennifer told Scottish newspaper The Evening Times: “It’s the perfect setting. The bar was just an empty space. We came up with the idea, and within a month the shop was up and running.

“I think the West End is getting a bit over- saturated. People think it’s great there’s a  vintage shop in town.”

Postcard Limited is at 162 Bath Street and is open from 11.15am until 6pm Tuesday to Saturday and most Sundays. Visit their Facebook page, here and their blog here.

Mr Ben may look like a cheesey retro shop from the outside, but it has some gems nestled on it’s rails and is well worth a visit. Fur coats were only £40 (London price – £250) – and lots of gorgeous jackets and exciting one off pieces.

Over in the West End, Starry Starry Night was a beautiful little treasure trove of exciting pieces with a more upmarket feel. Think retro glamour and you’ve got the right idea. It’s hidden away down a lane opposite the Hill Head underground station.

Watermelon and its sister shop The Glasgow Vintage Co are only a stroll apart and both should not be missed. Watermelon’s sail rail had some exciting pieces in pastels (perfect for jumping ahead of this S/S 2012 trend).

Gavin O’Brien owns the two shops with his wife Mari. He told The Skinny: “There was a space in the West End for us. We started looking for a place about four months ago, and we really have opened in a fantastic location. We have some very good sources for filling the shop with our vintage offerings.”

Retro is just round the corner and is a long-established purveyor of quality second-hand goods. They sell everything from Victorian lace to 60′s psychedelia, tail coats and evening dresses to 1970s flares.
