WHITNEY Houston has died at the age of 48 in Los Angeles.
Police have said confirmed that she died in the Beverly Hilton Hotel where she was staying.
The popular singer, whose hits include I Will Always Love You and How Will I Know, was one of the greatest female artists of our time.
But the star was troubled by substance abuse and turbulent marriage to Bobby Brown.
Cops received an emergency call at 15.43 local time (23:43 GMT), Beverly Hills police spokesman Mark Rosen told the BBC.
“There were a number of people on scene who were able to positively identify Ms Houston for us,” he said.
Houston was also had success in film acting including The Bodyguard and Waiting To Exhale.
Police investigators have said that there was “no obvious signs of criminal intent”.
A tribute is expected to be held tonight at the Grammys.
